Psychological Effects of Smoking - Preparing Your Mind to Quit
Smoking
Quitting
smoking is becoming more and more popular in this day and age.
How many times have you been standing in the smoking area at
work talking with your buddy about wanting to quit smoking? It
happens all the time, people get together to smoke only to talk
about how they all wish they could quit.
When I was a
smoker I had convinced myself that quitting smoking was going to
be hard and painful. I had also convinced myself that I would
be giving up something I truly enjoyed. Smoking was a mechanism
that I used to get through the day, whether good or bad. I
feared not being able to enjoy that after dinner cigarette that
completed my meal and brought satisfaction. The fact of the
matter is that I had brainwashed myself into believing that
smoking brought me pleasure. Well if smoking was pleasurable
then why did I want to quit smoking so badly?
I knew all
the terrible things that smoking was doing to my health and yet
I was scared to let it go. I would often hide the fact that I
smoked and try to get rid of the offensive smell after each and
every cigarette. I simply did not want people to know that I
smoked. I was embarrassed to be a smoker and I truly hated
smoking but I was scared to quit for the fear of giving up
something that I perceived to help me so much.
Is what I am
saying starting to sound a little crazy? Well maybe it should.
It goes to show how the mind can play tricks on you when you
want to quit smoking. The same mind is telling you that you
need to quit smoking while at the same time that you will be
missing out if you do. The psychological effects of smoking
make up over 90% of the battle when quitting smoking. Once you
are able to regain control and expose the lies about smoking you
are well on your way to being able to kick the habit for good.
Before you
quit smoking, identify the fallacies that are preventing you
from quitting smoking. They may jump right out at you or you
may need to spend time examining your thoughts and behavior.
Why is it that you smoke? Are you fearful of quitting smoking?
What situations make you think you need a cigarette? These are
some good questions to begin with. Prepare you mind to quit
smoking by undoing many of the lies you have come to believe.
The truth is; smoking is not your friend and you don’t need to
smoke for whatever reason. Spend some time examining your
thoughts before you have a cigarette. Then when you go out to
smoke focus on the cigarette. How does it make you feel? How
did it taste? Etc…
You are going
to notice more and more that smoking does not bring you
pleasure. You are going to see that the reasons you smoke don’t
always make sense and that there are beliefs about smoking that
need to be changed. You have been brainwashed into thinking you
need to smoke to feel normal. You don’t? Here is a quote that
I found that can help you prepare you mind to quit smoking and
counteract the psychological effects of smoking.
“Whatever you
hold in your mind will tend to occur in your life. If you
continue to believe as you have always believed, you will
continue to act as you have always acted. If you continue to act
as you have always acted, you will continue to get what you have
always gotten. If you want different results in your life or
your work, all you have to do is change your mind.”
